Id like to share some of my thoughts on dating since it can be confusing and discouraging at times. I’m not sharing this as if Im perfect. No, far from it! Just like anybody else, I fall, stumble, & make mistakes in my relationships.
The word “dating” is not even found in the Bible. There are some principles to go by and that is that we must separate from the world’s view on dating because God’s way contradicts the world’s (2 Peter 2:20). While the world’s view may be to date around as much as we want, the biblical view encourages us to discover the character of a person before making any commitment to him or her.
I like the Old Testament time marriages (Abraham, Isaac). They married somebody their families knew or they themselves knew. Of course, it was an arranged marriage! But It seems so simple back then. What happened to relationships today? What went wrong? Why is it so complex? Why can’t we have simple relationships? I think we (including myself) make the relationships so complex today. It’s because we are competing (going) with the worldly view of relationships/dating.
The Biblical relationship focuses on two main things: Spirituality (love for God above all else and desire toward Christ-likeness) and Character (the heart). He takes care of all the rest as He brings two people together! Do we believe that with all of our hearts? What we need to focus is following His guidance, and not missing His gentle voice! He will bring His choice of a mate if we let Him! He did so in the OT. He is the same God today! The culture and people have changed, but not God!
I know that we all have our ideals in mind. I had it too until recently! I wonder if we are truly prepared to let Him bring His choice of a mate into our lives??? Because it will look so different than what we have in mind! God says His ways are so different than our ways and His thoughts are so different than our thoughts (Isaiah 55). Massive difference!
Ultimately, He is the perfect matchmaker who made both man and woman. So He knows our hearts and our characters perfectly well.”He is intimately acquainted with all our ways” (Psalm 139)!
I don’t’ think decisions for a mate should ever be made based on emotions. “Strong emotion is not necessarily a sign of love. Emotions should follow, not lead. God’s love is the perfect example of love as it does not require receiving anything in return, is patient, forgiving, and sacrificing!” Is there this kind of love out there today???? I think if God who is Love, who knows all about true love, is in it, in the center of it, its possible! God Himself said, “Is anything too difficult for the LORD?” ( Gen. 18:14; Jer. 32:27). “Does the clay say to the potter, ‘What are you making?” (Isaiah 45:9).
